A Language Based Model for Analysis of Communication Intensive Processes in Health Care

Abstract

Health care is a complex socio-technical domain in which poor communication between system actors can result in significant loss events. Medication prescribing is one such process in which poor communication has led to severe injury or death. This paper presents an extension of a feedback control loop model that permits reasoning about communication from a linguistic perspective. The concepts of language, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics, are central to this theme. The proposed model is applied to a hypothetical medication prescribing scenario. Initial results suggest the model can be of value for analysis of communication intensive processes.
