Hello! I am an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Victoria in British Columbia, Canada. I am a researcher, practitioner, and educator working the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI), software, and systems engineering.

My Current Work

My work is focused on systems and software engineering for security- and safety-critical software-intensive systems. As a researcher, I am interested in methods used by engineers to analyze and assess these systems with the ultimate goal of deciding whether they can be deployed and operated. As a practitioner, I enjoy applying these methods to establish a basis for trust in critical systems. AI is also increasingly used in this area, both as part of deployed systems and as a tool by practitioners. Much of my recent work is focused on how to gain trust in critical systems or tools that depend on AI.

Previously

Prior to joining the faculty at the University of Victoria:

  • I was the Vice President of Engineering at Critical Systems Labs (CSL). In this role, I worked with many of CSL’s clients in the automotive, robotics, rail, health, energy, and defence sectors. I also led the development of Socrates, a leading commercial tool for preparing and managing assurance cases. During my time at CSL, I was fortunate enough to work with many brilliant researchers and practitioners, including some from: General Motors, Blackberry/QNX, CERN, BC Hydro, Motional AD, MDA Space, the Software Engineering Institute at Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Toronto, and Fraunhofer IKS,

  • I completed a Ph.D. in Computer Science at the University of Victoria in (supervisor: Dr. Jens H. Weber) focused on confidence assessment for dynamic safety and security assurance cases.

  • I have a licensed as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with Engineers and Geoscientists of B.C. since 2019.
